Maria and Berni‘s story began in June 2026, when they arrived at Devore Animal Shelter as part of a large litter of eight-week-old kittens. Several of the little ones were sick and needed medical attention. While Maria and most of her siblings bounced back quickly, Berni needed some extra TLC and was placed in a shelter foster home for a week to recover. Meanwhile, one by one, their siblings found homes of their own until Maria was the last kitten left waiting. But these sisters had a happier ending in store! Kitty Devore Rescue stepped in to welcome both girls into our foster program. Berni was reunited with Maria, and together they headed off to a loving foster home in Los Angeles, where a doting foster mom showered them with affection and helped them blossom into the happy, healthy young ladies they are today.
Maria is a gorgeous calico tabby with dainty white socks, soft peachy patches, and a pair of soulful eyes that could melt just about anyone’s heart. She’s a delightful blend of playful kitten and sweet, easygoing companion. Maria loves a good game of chase, especially when her sister is involved, but she’s equally happy to settle in beside you on the bed, stretch out comfortably, and gaze up at you with those beautiful, thoughtful eyes. She’s affectionate without being demanding, curious without being overly adventurous, and has a gentle confidence that makes her a pleasure to be around. Maria also gets along wonderfully with other cats and would be happy to share her new home with additional feline friends.
Berni is the little explorer of the duo! With her sleek tabby stripes, snowy white chin, and enormous green-gold eyes that seem to notice absolutely everything, she’s always ready to investigate whatever catches her attention. Bright, playful, and wonderfully curious, Berni takes her kitten responsibilities very seriously. Toys must be pounced upon, interesting corners must be inspected, and any unusual household activity deserves her immediate supervision! But beneath that inquisitive exterior is a sweet, friendly girl who enjoys being near her people and sharing in the daily happenings of family life. Like Maria, Berni is comfortable around other cats and has a lovely, sociable nature.
As wonderful as these girls are individually, they’re even more delightful together. Maria and Berni have been companions since the very beginning, weathering the uncertainties of shelter life, a temporary separation while Berni recovered, and the transition into foster care. Through it all, their sisterly attachment has only grown stronger. They chase each other, tumble through spirited wrestling matches, investigate their surroundings as a team, and curl up together when their kitten batteries finally run low. They are playmates, confidantes, and one another’s greatest source of comfort. Because their bond is such an important part of their happiness and emotional well-being, Maria and Berni must be adopted together.
